Este sábado se llevó a cabo el funeral del difunto papa Francisco, quien falleció el pasado lunes a sus 88 años. La ceremonia concluyó con el entierro del cuerpo en la basílica de Santa María la Mayor, cumpliendo con los deseos del santo padre. Al rito, que empezó a las 10:00 a. m., hora local, en la plaza de San Pedro, en la Ciudad de Vaticano, conglomeró a miles de asistentes, entre ellos jefes de Estado y miembros de la realeza del mundo.

Ante 250.000 personas y dignatarios mundiales, el cardenal decano Giovanni Battista Re destacó los “innumerables” esfuerzos de Franciso en defensa de migrantes y refugiados, del Mediterráneo a México.

Semanas antes de morir, el jesuita argentino criticó con dureza la política estadounidense de expulsar migrantes. Esto no impidió que Trump alabara a un hombre “fantástico” que “amaba el mundo”.

Otra de las luchas del santo padre que el cardenal decano recordó también resonó con fuerza en la plaza, cuando Estados Unidos intenta lograr un acuerdo de paz entre Rusia y Ucrania, en guerra desde febrero de 2022.

El fervor popular por el jesuita argentino llevó a que muchos fieles llegaran de madrugada para asegurarse un buen puesto en el funeral.

“No fue solo el papa, fue la definición de lo que es un ser humano”, dijo Andrea Ugalde, de 39 años y llegada de Los Ángeles. “Cambió la Iglesia [...], defendió a los enfermos, a los sin hogar, a los pobres, a los animales”, agregó.

Entre la marea de fieles también se encontraba el australiano Julián Assange, fundador de WikiLeaks, acompañado de su familia, constató un fotógrafo de la AFP.

La esposa de Assange, Stella, dijo: “Ahora que Julián está libre, todos hemos venido a Roma para expresar la gratitud de nuestra familia por el apoyo del papa durante su persecución. Nuestros hijos y yo tuvimos el honor de reunirnos con el papa Francisco en junio de 2023 para hablar sobre cómo liberar a Julián de la prisión de Belmarsh. Francisco le escribió a Julián en prisión e incluso le propuso concederle asilo en el Vaticano”, según registra en la cuenta de X de WikiLeaks.
